Alexander Paffrath (40), Head of Operations at the German Life Saving Society (DLRG), recommends: “Bathers should always go to guarded bathing areas and always pay attention to the beach safety flags.”

What the bathing flags mean

Yellow-red flag: Lifeguards are on duty.

Yellow flag: There are currents, swimming and bathing only recommended for experienced swimmers.

Red flag: no swimming or bathing.

Orange Windsock on Pole: Winds are offshore, use of inflatable water toys or air mattresses is not recommended.
