Blood ALT and AST levels decreased in mice that consumed psyllium husk.
Research has shown that psyllium husk (plantain seeds), used as a laxative, is effective in preventing hangovers and liver damage.
Ryu Dam, professor of gastroenterology at Soonchunhyang University Seoul Hospital, Yang Kyung-mo, clinical instructor of gastroenterology at Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital, and Jeong Beom-seon, professor of anatomy at Yonsei University Wonju College of Medicine. The joint research team made mice drink large amounts of alcohol and compared the group that took psyllium husk with the group that did not. The observations and findings were published in a paper.
The research team compared rats’ blood tests, liver biopsies, small intestine biopsies, PCR (genetic testing), and mouse behavioral experiments. As a result of comparing the two groups, the blood ALT and AST levels, which represent liver inflammation, were significantly lower in the group that took psyllium chapi after consuming alcohol compared to the group that did not.
In a small intestine biopsy, there was less small intestine loss in the psyllium husk group, and PCR also confirmed that the expression of alcohol-degrading enzymes in the small intestine was low. In addition, in the psyllium husk group, the concentration of acetaldehyde in the blood, which plays a critical role in hangovers, including blood ethanol, was lower, and the expression of inflammatory cytokines and alcohol-degrading enzymes in liver tissue was also significantly lower.
Professor Ryu Dam said, “Through animal testing, this study confirmed that psyllium husk has the effect of protecting against hangovers and liver damage that occurs after alcohol consumption.” He added, “I hope this will help in the development of hangover relievers or treatments for liver damage caused by alcohol in the future.” “He said.
The results of this study were published in the international academic journal ‘Frontiers in Pharmacology’ as ‘Psyllium fiber improves hangovers and inflammatory liver injury by inhibiting intestinal drinking’. It was introduced under the title.
