Tim Cook appealed to Trump about EU fines”/>
On the PBD Podcast, a candidate for the post of the 47th President of the United States Donald Trump said that a few hours before the recording he received a call from the head of Apple Tim Cookto discuss fines from the European Union. This was reported by The Verge, Day.Az reports with reference to Gazeta.ru.
According to Trump, Cook complained that the European Union fined the company $15 billion and then another $2 billion. Cook expressed concern that the EU was using these funds to manage its enterprises. Trump assured Cook that if he is elected, he will not allow the EU to take advantage of American companies.
The Verge contacted Apple for comment, but there was no response. It is unknown whether Tim Cook discussed this topic with Kamala Harris, the US Democratic Party candidate.
On March 4, 2024, the European Commission fined Apple €1.8 billion for violating EU antitrust laws, and in September – €13 billion for underpayment of taxes as a result of an illegal agreement with the Irish authorities. This case has been ongoing since 2016. In 2020, the EU General Court exempted Apple from paying this amount after filing an appeal against the European Commission’s decision, but a month ago the EU’s highest court overturned this decision.
