Today is World Handwashing Day. The day is being celebrated globally to promote hand washing habits and raise public awareness. It is celebrated worldwide on 15 October every year. The day was first celebrated on October 15, 2008 in Stockholm, Sweden to raise awareness about handwashing with soap at the global, regional and local levels. Later the UN General Assembly decided to observe the date every year.
This year’s theme of the day – why clean hands are still important? Like other countries of the world, the day is being celebrated with due dignity by the initiative of the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives like every year in Bangladesh.
On the occasion of World Handwashing Day, Mr. President. Sahabuddin and the chief advisor Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus gave a separate message. President said in the message. Sahabuddin urged all stakeholders including public and private institutions and development agencies to play an active role in achieving the ‘Sustainable Development Goals’ by 2030 and increasing public awareness about proper sanitation, waste management and hygiene.

He said that the current government is working relentlessly for the development of public health. He mentioned that various programs and projects are being implemented to ensure clean water supply, hygienic sanitation and waste management.
The chief advisor said that this public awareness event organized by the local government department will make a significant contribution to the development of public health by ensuring health protection for all. Incidentally, there can be about 50,000 bacteria at the root of one millimeter hair follicle in our body. These germs cannot be seen with the naked eye. So when we use our hands to bring food to our mouths or touch our noses, those hands can become a dangerous medium for spreading germs—if they are unclean. How many things do we touch with our hands throughout the day? So hands can carry many deadly germs. This is why hand washing is very important.
