Today is the World Heart Day, the purpose of which is to raise public awareness of cardiovascular diseases, the risk factors contributing to their development, as well as to initiate mass events aimed at preventing these diseases and promoting a healthy lifestyle in all age groups of the population.

Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death worldwide, killing 18.6 million people each year. 85% of these deaths are due to coronary heart disease and cerebrovascular disease.

According to the data of 2021, every second death of the RA population is caused by cardiovascular diseases (CVD) (48.3%). Among men, the rate of premature death from CAD is 2 times higher than that of women, which is due to 3 to 5 risk factors contributing to the development of CAD in 60% of men aged 45-69 (smoking, high blood pressure and incomplete control of its regulation, physical inactivity, unhealthy diet, presence of excess weight and obesity).
Every year, about 52 thousand new cases of SAD are registered among the RA population, the total number of patients is about 260 thousand.

Over the past 30 years, the prevalence and mortality rates of SAH have increased by about 1.5 times. The main causes of morbidity and mortality are ischemic heart diseases, particularly acute myocardial infarction, cerebrovascular diseases, arterial hypertension.

Prevention of cardiovascular diseases, early detection, improvement of morbidity and mortality rates and reduction of the economic burden are among the priority tasks of the Ministry of Health. For this purpose, a number of programs and events are implemented, in particular:

1) Screening program, within the framework of which all citizens aged 35-68 can be examined for free in the primary care for the purpose of early detection and diagnosis of high blood pressure.

In 2020, about 202,326 researches were carried out, and in 2021 – about 299,548 researches.

2) Stent for Life program, revised and expanded in 2018-2019. during, in particular, in 2018 stenting of the coronary artery responsible for heart attack is performed with a drug-coated stent, and in 2019 the program also included cases of myocardial infarction without ST-elevation, as well as aortic-coronary shunting with preferential conditions. Within the framework of this life-saving program, around 14,338 emergency heart surgery services have been provided to date (from 2015 to July 2022 inclusive) since the program’s inception on free terms guaranteed by the state.

3) A program of thrombolytic treatment and mechanical thrombectomy of acute or subacute ischemic strokes of the brain, which was implemented in 2 medical institutions in Yerevan, and from November 2021, also in Gyumri Medical Center. About 1,531 patients were served under the free conditions guaranteed by the state within the program (from 2019 to July 2022 inclusive).

Emphasizing the need for the development and improvement of the field, in February 2022, a coordinating council for increasing the effectiveness of treatment and management of cardiovascular diseases was established, which includes the best specialists of the country.
