CENTRAL EDITORIAL, 07 Feb. 23 (ACI Prensa).- The story of Saint Tobias is found in the book of the Bible that bears his name, the same one that means: “God is good.”
According to the Holy Scriptures, Tobias always fulfilled his religious duties. Being still very young, when his relatives strayed from the true religion and began to worship the golden calf, he never wanted to surrender to that idol and he was the only one in his family who went to Jerusalem at the great festivals to worship the only God. .
He always gave a tenth of what he earned to the Temple and to the poor.
He married a woman of his own religion, named Ana, and had a son whom he also named Tobias.
He was exiled with the Jews, but rose to a high government position in Nineveh. Later the new king came, Sennacherib, who persecuted the Jews, and Tobias lost his position and was left in misery.
Some time later he was blinded when dung fell into his eyes from a nest while he was sleeping. His wife reproached him for his condition, but he remained faithful to the Lord.
Tobias, full of sadness, withdrew to cry, and prayed saying: “My God, all this suffering comes to us for the sins we have committed. Lord, have mercy on me, and if I have to continue suffering so many humiliations, rather remember that me, and lead me to You”.
His son Tobias went to a distant city to look for money that was owed to his father. He was accompanied by a young man who turned out to be the Archangel Raphael.
In that distant city he fell in love with Sara, but was warned that she had been married 7 times and their husbands always died because of a demon. Rafael told her not to be afraid of her and to take her as her wife.
Tobias and Sara prayed fervently on their wedding night, placing themselves under the protection of God. Then they returned to Nineveh where their father was.
At Rafael’s command, young Tobias rubbed his father’s eyes with the gall of a fish he had taken in the river. Then the scales fell from his eyes and he recovered his sight. When Tobías was about to give Rafael half of the money he had as a thank you, he identified himself as the angel of the Lord and disappeared.
