A beloved icon of British television, Tom Baker, received a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) last week, a recognition of his notable contributions too the arts adn entertainment. The ceremony was notably poignant as the actor, famed for his portrayal of the Fourth Doctor in Doctor Who, was joined by his former co-star, Louise Jameson, who played Leela alongside him from 1977 to 1978.
A Timeless Honor for a Timelord
The actor was surrounded by family and friends during the ceremony, where he received the honor from His Majesty’s Lord lieutenant of Kent,Lady Colgrain. A photograph from the event captured a touching moment, showing Baker holding Jameson’s hand as they posed with Lady Colgrain in front of a replica of the Doctor’s iconic TARDIS. baker, ever the showman, sported his signature long red scarf – later switching to his trademark striped version – with the newly-pinned MBE proudly displayed on his lapel.
Reflecting on the occasion, Baker shared with RadioTimes.com: “it was a real honour to receive the MBE from Lady Colgrain, representing His Majesty, in the same way as it was a real honour for me to play Doctor Who for all those years.” He continued, expressing his surprise at the enduring affection for his work, stating, “It never ceases to amaze me how fondly people remember me 34 years after my last adventure in the TARDIS and I found it hard to believe it was so long ago when I found myself back in the TARDIS last week, with my beloved scarf around my neck!”
Leela’s Legacy and a Divisive Departure
Jameson’s character, Leela, a fierce and loyal companion, traveled with the Fourth Doctor across nine stories and 40 episodes between January 1977 and March 1978. Her departure from the series in The Invasion in Time proved controversial,as Leela unexpectedly chose to remain on the Time Lord home planet of Gallifrey and marry Andred,Commander of the Chancellery guard.
Speaking at a British film Institute (BFI) event last year, Jameson revisited the storyline, expressing her dissatisfaction with the original ending. “I think she should have died saving the Doctor’s life – something really heroic,” she suggested. “Or you travel forward and she’s got a football team of children… something dramatic, anyway. I mean, it’s so cliché, isn’t it, that she’s fallen in love, that’s how we get rid of her.” This sentiment highlights the enduring impact of the character and the strong connection fans felt with her journey.
Continuing the Adventure
Despite their departures from the television series decades ago, Baker and Jameson have continued to collaborate, lending their voices to Big Finish audio dramas, extending the adventures of the fourth Doctor and Leela for a devoted fanbase.
