It was found that webtoon writers, who are in the top 1% of annual income, earn an average of 1.114 billion won. Among ‘one-person media content creators’ such as YouTubers and BJs (Internet broadcasters), those in the top 1% of annual income earned 538 million won.
According to data received from the National Tax Service by People Power Party lawmaker Park Seong-hoon, a member of the National Assembly’s Planning and Finance Committee, on the 13th, the number of ‘webtoon writers, etc.’ who reported comprehensive income tax attributable to 2022 was 14,426, reporting a total of 696.5 billion won. Their average income was 48.3 million won. There were 15,448 solo media creators, including YouTubers and BJs, who reported a total of 516.2 billion won. They earned an average income of 33.42 million won per person. The average per capita income of webtoon writers is about 1.5 times higher.
Even when considering the top earners, the income of webtoon writers was much higher than that of solo media content creators. Based on the top 1% reporting income, webtoon writers reported an average income of 1.114 billion won. This amount is more than twice the income of a single media creator (538 million won). Even based on the top 10%, the average reported income of webtoon writers was 268 million won, significantly exceeding the income of solo media creators (188 million won).
Income polarization was much higher in the solo media creator occupation group. The income gap between the top 10% and the bottom 10% was 63 times that of solo media creators and twice that of webtoon writers (30 times).
