The severe weather event in Spain on October 29 led to heavy rainfall, particularly affecting the eastern and southern regions of the country. An Isolated Depression in Nieves Altos (DANA) was identified as the cause, resulting from the interaction between cold air at high altitudes and warmer air at the surface, as reported by Spain’s state meteorological agency, AEMET. The storm significantly disrupted rail and air transportation, and reports indicated that seven individuals were initially missing due to flooding incidents.
Emergency services focused their efforts on locating six of these missing persons in Castilla-La Mancha, amidst challenging conditions attributed to spontaneous flash floods that overwhelmed certain urban areas. In some locations, the quantity of rain experienced in a single day was equivalent to a month’s worth, according to local reports.
In Andalusia, a high-speed train carrying 276 passengers derailed due to the adverse conditions; fortunately, there were no injuries reported. AEMET issued a red alert for the Valencia region and a second-level alert in parts of Andalusia, with numerous roads affected by floods.
In response to the crisis, Spanish President Pedro Sanchez expressed his concern and monitored the developments. He highlighted the ongoing rescue efforts through social media and confirmed the deployment of the Military Emergency Unit (UME) to assist local authorities in Valencia.
As the situation unfolded, officials in Valencia reported on October 30 that several bodies had been recovered from the areas affected by the flooding. The regional president, Carlos Mazón, emphasized the necessity of prioritizing the notification to victims’ families before releasing specific details.
Throughout the aftermath, images and video footage depicting the devastation caused by the torrential rains circulated widely on social media, showcasing the urgency of the situation and the impact on local communities. Emergency services continued their operations, urging residents to remain indoors as the region dealt with the consequences of the severe weather event.
