Towards the FIG Congress in Doha. Farid Gaibov’s second attempt

by times news cr

This week will be held under the banner of the Congress of the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG), for which Farid Gaibov is running for the post of president. The head of European Gymnastics (EG) will compete with the current head of the organization, Morinari Watanabe, who is running for his third term.

F. Gaibov, on the eve of the Congress, which will be held on October 24-26 in Doha, shared his vision for the development of gymnastics.

“As many of you know, I have also announced my candidacy for the presidency of FIG. After the last election, I considered it my duty to do everything possible for the benefit of our sport. There are areas that I feel need significant attention and improvement for gymnastics. And it is vital that they are addressed if we are to see the future of this species on a global scale. We deserve to be at a higher level and we must continue to develop the commercial side of the sport and promote it. And also take into account the effect of gymnasts’ performances on the world stage. These are our stars who will inspire future generations, so they deserve everything we can invest in their development,” said the President of European Gymnastics.

For F. Gaibov, this is the second election to the post of head of the International Federation. At the previous ones, held three years ago in Antalya, he received 47 votes, which was a good result for the first time.

It is interesting that the current president of FIG now has two election campaigns at once. Watanabe has submitted his candidacy for the post of head of the International Olympic Committee. Even during the Summer Games in Paris, IOC head Thomas Bach announced that he intended to resign at the end of his second term next year. And at the moment, seven candidates have entered the election race, including a Japanese functionary. The new IOC president will be elected at a session in Ancient Olympia on March 18-21 and will take office in June of the same year. The candidates will make presentations to all IOC members at a closed meeting in Lausanne in January.

Returning to the FIG Congress, it should be noted that it will also be elective for the Technical Committees in all disciplines. In particular, in the Technical Committee for Rhythmic Gymnastics, headed by Noha Abu Shabana (Egypt), Natalya Bulanova, who is the Sports Director of the national federation, is running for a second term. There will be 11 candidates vying for six seats.

“I wish all applicants from different parts of the world success. I am confident that our colleagues will select candidates who are best suited for the job, with the qualifications and experience commensurate with the positions they will fill. We are all gymnastics people. It doesn’t matter where we are, our goal is the same, and every decision we make is aimed at the bright future of our sport,” added F. Gaibov.
