Toyota Recalls Over 161,000 Tundra Trucks Due to Rearview Camera Defect

Toyota is initiating a recall of more than 161,000 pickup trucks in the United States due to a software glitch that could disable the rearview camera display, increasing the risk of accidents. The recall, announced Friday by federal safety regulators, affects certain 2024 and 2025 Toyota Tundra and Tundra Hybrid models.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) stated that a malfunctioning rearview camera “reduces the driver’s view behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.” This recall comes as part of a broader trend of automotive safety concerns, with other manufacturers like Hyundai also issuing recalls.

Recall Details: Tundra and Tundra Hybrid Models

The recall encompasses 161,268 vehicles, with regulators estimating that 100% of the affected trucks contain the defect. Specifically, approximately 61,501 Tundra Hybrid trucks manufactured between August 17, 2023, and June 17, 2025, are included. Additionally, around 99,767 non-hybrid 2024–2025 Tundra pickups, produced between August 8, 2023, and June 19, 2025, are subject to the recall. These vehicles are equipped with Toyota’s panoramic view monitor (PVM) system.

Toyota first identified the issue in March 2025, following a report of an incorrect camera view appearing while reversing. Further reports emerged in April and May, but initial attempts to replicate the problem proved unsuccessful, according to NHTSA. The defect was ultimately reproduced during testing in July 2025.

Repair and Notification Process

Toyota dealers will provide a free software update to the parking assist electronic control unit (ECU) to rectify the issue. Owner notification letters are scheduled to be mailed beginning on March 10. This proactive measure aims to address the safety concern swiftly and efficiently.

The recall follows previous actions by Toyota, including recalls of approximately 127,000 pickup trucks and SUVs due to potential engine issues, and over 443,000 trucks for potential reverse light failures.

Market Impact and Broader Trends

The recall occurs against a backdrop of evolving automotive industry dynamics. Notably, President Donald Trump has recently advocated for the production of small Kei cars in America, prompting discussion about whether U.S. drivers are prepared to embrace smaller vehicle sizes.

Meanwhile, Toyota’s stock (Ticker: TM) closed at $226.84 on Friday, experiencing a slight decline of 0.11%. The company also recently reported a $1.3 billion profit hit attributed to Trump’s tariffs over a two-month period.

Hyundai is also facing recall challenges, with hundreds of thousands of Palisade SUVs being recalled due to potential airbag deployment failures. This highlights a broader pattern of recalls impacting multiple automakers.

Toyota did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the latest recall.
