The 35-year-old Frenchwoman won the scratch and omnium on Sunday March 24 at the para-cycling world championships in Brazil. The French team leaves Rio with 19 medals, including 7 gold.

A race, two gold charms around the neck. Marie Patouillet struck a big blow on Sunday March 24 by becoming double world champion in scratch (race with a mass start) and omnium (combined), two track cycling disciplines.

After the race, the one who had gleaned two bronze medals at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics (in pursuit and during the road test), reacted by rewinding his course. “I didn’t want to be too greedy, I told myself: aim to win the omnium, she tells the Team. During the scratch, I didn’t let go of the New Zealander who had the same number of points as me. But when I saw Heidi [Gaugain] leave, I took his wheel. There were two laps left, I knew I had what it took to do a sprint lap. I didn’t give up. And, to finish my last World Championships, I think I couldn’t have dreamed of better.”

Five months before the Paris Paralympic Games, on the Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines track, where the two disciplines, scratch and omnium, will not be on the program, the performance highlights the great form of Marie Patouillet. At 35 years old, born with a foot deformity (she therefore competes in category C5), she opened her counters on Wednesday with a first silver medal in the 500m. The woman who is also a general practitioner launched the Rio para-cycling world championships for the Blues and opened the way for Alexandre Léauté and Dorian Foulon, also double titled.

France leaves Rio with 12 titles, 5 silver medals and 2 bronze medals, including four coronations for Alexandre Léauté alone, one of the favorites for the medal in Paris (August 28-September 8). The 23-year-old Frenchman won in four categories (kilometer, pursuit, scratch and omnium) with a world record during the kilometer event.

“The form is there”

“The world record was not originally planned but we took it, I am very happy, it shows that the form is there,” reacted Alexandre Léauté after his title with the French Handisport Federation. Reigning Paralympic pursuit champion, he had already shone last year, during the “Super Worlds” in Glasgow – on the track and on the road – by winning five titles. The Blues had collected 37 medals for their part, including 13 gold.

Behind him, Dorian Foulon, 25, won three gold medals in his C5 category – he was born with a deformity in his left foot – in the pursuit, the scratch and the omniun.
