SSV Reutlingen had terrible news to announce shortly after the turn of the year. The 22-year-old footballer Luca Meixner died unexpectedly after the Christmas holidays. The traditional club announced this on Instagram.
In the message, Reutlingen wrote: “Last weekend we received the terrible news that our player Luca Meixner died unexpectedly on Friday, December 27th, at the age of 22.”
The entire SSV family is deeply shocked and stunned. “His teammates, all committees and employees mourn with Lucas’s survivors and our thoughts are with his family, friends and companions,” it continued.
According to a report in the “Reutlinger General-Anzeiger”, Meixner was found dead in his bed; there are currently no details about the cause of death. The 22-year-old played 22 times for Reutlingen this season and was one of the regular staff of the upper division club.
Meixner already played in his youth for the club, which played in the then first-class Oberliga Süd before the Bundesliga was founded. Reutlingen achieved promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga in 2000 before the team was relegated again after three seasons. The club crashed and even had to declare bankruptcy in 2010.
