Traffic light probes: Police unions see red on cannabis legalization – domestic politics

by time news

Day two of the exploratory talks between the SPD, FDP and the Greens. Negotiations have been going on in Berlin since 9 a.m. on the formation of the first traffic light coalition at federal level. After the parties showed themselves to be silent yesterday, there is to be a public statement on the status of the deliberations today at around 1.30 p.m.

But while it remains unclear whether the traffic light will actually turn green in the end, others are already seeing red. Specifically, the police unions are reporting. You warn the negotiators of the exploratory talks of the SPD, Greens and FDP against the legalization of cannabis!

It makes no sense to “open the door to another dangerous and often trivialized drug” next to the legal but dangerous alcohol, said the federal chairman of the police union, Oliver Malchow, of the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung” (NOZ).

And further: “It has to be an end to glossing over the joint.” The GdP boss warned that the consumption of cannabis could lead to considerable health problems and social conflicts among young people. In addition, legalizing this drug would not eliminate the black market trade, said Malchow.

The German Police Union (DPolG) also spoke out vehemently against the approval of cannabis consumption. “It would be the start of a foggy future instead of a departure for a modern Germany if this project were included in the coalition agreement of a traffic light coalition,” said DPolG boss Rainer Wendt.

His warning: Accidents with innocent injured people are already happening again and again due to cannabis consumption – the control by the police is completely inadequate.

Background: Greens and FDP have long been in favor of legal, regulated trade in cannabis. The SPD does not want blanket legalization, but is in favor of decriminalizing cannabis. The managing director of the German Hemp Association told the “NOZ”: “The chances of legalization have never been as great as now.”

To put it plainly: If the traffic light coalition came about, legalization of cannabis would at least be likely.

On Wednesday and Thursday, the general secretaries of the traffic light parties want to continue working in small groups, while SPD chancellor candidate Olaf Scholz (63) travels to the meeting of the G20 finance ministers in Washington.

The aim is to take stock of the interim balance at the end of the week – and to decide whether the three of you will enter into coalition negotiations. However, parallel to the traffic light negotiations, the Greens and the FDP have kept the possibility of a Jamaica coalition with the Union open.
