When the police were called to an apartment in <a href="https://time.news/record-4-7-billion-nok-to-be-distributed-from-norways-aquaculture-fund-to-coastal-municipalities/" title="Record 4.7 Billion NOK to be Distributed from Norway's Aquaculture Fund to Coastal Municipalities”>Vestnes on Tuesday morning after an emergency call, they found a woman who was eventually declared dead.
They also found a seriously injured child, who was sent to St. Olav’s hospital in Trondheim.
– The police are investigating whether a murder has occurred, says Police Inspector Anders Skorpen-Trøen.
He states that the two were found by an outsider. The woman is in her late 40s and lived with the child, who is of primary school age. The child is seriously injured.

Arrested Possible Perpetrator
Shortly after 12 PM, the police announced that they had arrested a possible perpetrator in Vestnes near the crime scene. The man is charged with grievous bodily injury leading to death and grievous bodily injury to the child. He is in his 20s and has a family relationship to the other two. He did not live in the apartment.
Skorpen-Trøen says that it is too early to say anything about the motive. He will also not comment on whether any weapons or items used at the scene have been found.
– The man is being cared for by the health services and will be presented for remand custody, says Skorpen-Trøen.

Denies Criminal Guilt
The accused has been in a brief interrogation late Tuesday evening. Roy Peder Kulblik is his lawyer.
– As far as I understand, he denies committing the acts referred to in the charge, says Kulblik.

Searching with Dogs and Drones
The police state that the arrest went smoothly.
– We have arrested a possible perpetrator based on evidence and information that we have clarified so far, says Tor-André Gram Franck from the police.
Christian Vegsund is the incident commander on the scene. He states that the police will search with both dogs and drones around the address on Tuesday afternoon.
– This is because we are still broadly investigating the case, he says.

There has been a strong police presence in Vestnes. In addition to forensic technicians and large operational forces, extra investigators from both Rauma and Ålesund have also been brought in to assist in the investigation.
Gram Franck says that the main hypothesis for the police so far is that it is a murder case.
– That is a main hypothesis we have, based on the evidence we have at the scene, but we do not exclude other hypotheses.

What evidence has been found at the scene, the police will not disclose in detail for now.
NRK has been in contact with a neighbor who says that he has never experienced noise or unrest before and that today’s incident came as a shock.

– A Difficult Case in a Community
The mayor of Vestnes says that a mental health team in the municipality is available for those in need.
– The police need to get an overview of what this is about. We must trust that the police are doing a thorough job and find out what has happened here. This is regardless a difficult case in a community, says Randi Bergundhaugen, mayor of Vestnes municipality.
Municipal Chief Ronny Engan says that the municipality has sent out information to both staff and parents at the school where the child is a student. The case affects the entire municipality of around 7000 residents.
– The crisis team has also been at the school, and tomorrow we will also show up and be with the affected grade, says Engan.
The police are working closely with Vestnes municipality to care for the child and other relatives in the case.
The police urge the public who have tips in the case to contact them.
