Chennai was left in shock and mourning after 19-year-old Jegatheeswaran, son of Selvasekhar from Crompet, took his own life due to the immense frustration of failing the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) not once, but twice. Madhyamik General Secretary, Vaiko, shared alarming statistics, citing that the introduction of NEET has led to the deaths of more than 20 students in Ariyalur alone. He urged students to remember that suicide is not the solution to their struggles.

Tamaka President, GK Vasan, expressed his regret over the student’s tragic death while acknowledging the increasing passing rate of Tamil Nadu students in the NEET exam across India.

Marxist Communist State Secretary, K. Balakrishnan, called for unity among parents and students in the fight against perceived injustices, urging them not to make hasty and painful decisions.

Tamaka Youth Leader, M. Yuvaraja, criticized the DMK government for making false promises regarding the cancellation of the NEET exam. He called for the government to conduct NEET coaching classes in Tamil Nadu until the central government takes action.

Numerous political leaders, including TKA President K. Veeramani, AAMUK General Secretary TTV Dhinakaran, BAMA President Anbumani, Tamil Nadu Life Rights Party President D. Velmurugan, and Humanity People’s Party President MH Jawahirullah, among others, have also expressed their condolences.

The tragic loss of Jegatheeswaran and Selvasekhar has once again highlighted the pressing need for a comprehensive examination of the NEET system and the mental health support available to students. It is hoped that this devastating incident will prompt the authorities to take decisive action to address these concerns and prevent further loss of young lives.
