Transport strike in Milan, ATM closes some sections of the M1 and M2 metro: buses and trams also at risk

by time news

A strike has been called for Friday 22 March involving ATM public transport in Milan. The first transport guarantee period ended at 8.45am. The M1, M3, M4 and M5 lines are currently open. Complications for travelers focus on M1 and M2 lines (in this article updates on the closed routes). Surface transport, such as trams, buses and trolleybuses, is also regular, but could be affected by traffic due to the increase in people who – after the strike announcement – chose to travel to the city by car.

Warranty bands

The second guarantee period is scheduled between 3pm and 6pm. After that time the vehicles may experience further inconveniences until the end of the service. Railway staff, therefore Trenord and Trenitalia, are not involved in the demonstration, as it is a strike of a provincial nature, which exclusively concerns the local public transport company Atm. A further strike is planned for trains which will begin on the evening of Friday 22 March until Sunday 24, putting at risk the journeys set by travelers over the weekend.

The reasons for the strike

The stop from activities, as reported by the unions, is a demonstration «against the liberalization, privatization and tenders of services currently managed by the ATM group and for the re-internalization of TPL services under contract and/or subcontracting; against the “Milano Next” project, for the transformation of Atm spa into a special company of the Municipality of Milan and the consequent direct in-house assignment of the services, as well as for their being free”. The note continues with «the reactivation of distancing between drivers and users with inhibition of the front door for passengers to board and alight; for cleaning, sanitizing and sanitizing vehicles and environments; for the protection of the safety of workers most exposed to aggressive acts, even with passive protection systems; for the use of holidays for traveling staff, company hiring plans and transformation of part-time contracts; for the increase of 150 euros net for all workers, to recover the insufficient increases in national contracts; for further corporate issues relating, among other things, to holiday pay, special shifts and clothing”.

Low wages compared to the increase in costs in Milan

«Despite the hiring notices, there are very few candidates – we read again – and the reason is attributable to the low entry salaries imposed by the Ccnl (1,300 euros per month for the first 9 years) in a city where the rent of a room in sharing it reaches 500 euros, exhausting work shifts, unparalleled hourly flexibility and little rest. The shortage of driving staff is leading to the systematic impossibility of enjoying the right to holidays, so much so that tram drivers are accumulating dozens of days of residual holidays. It is therefore impossible to have a normal psychophysical recovery. In fact, for the first time in history, during 2023, 300 ATM workers would have resigned, with or without having another job. Added to this are the usual retirements.”
