In the early 1960s Heinz Stücke set out on a world tour that would take him to 196 countries. Here he tells us what makes life on two wheels so special.

Mr piecesYou set out from eastern Westphalia in 1962 on a journey that would end only 51 years later. What do you take with you on a bike ride around the world?
Too. At the beginning of the tour I had about 50 kilos of luggage. Tent, stove, dishes, clothes. Added to this was the weight of my bike. Steel frame, double braced, custom made by Paderborn, weighing 25 kilos. You have to have some serious legs to operate a machine like that.
