Trump Commutes Sentence of Disgraced Ex-Congressman George Santos
A former Republican congressman, George Santos, was released from prison Friday after Donald Trump commuted his sentence. The move comes after Santos pleaded guilty to wire fraud and aggravated identity theft, and was sentenced to more than seven years in prison earlier this year.
Trump announced the commutation in a post on his Truth Social platform, describing Santos as “somewhat of a ‘rogue,’” but arguing that “there are many rogues throughout our Country that aren’t forced to serve seven years in prison.” The decision underscores a pattern of clemency granted by the president to political allies and loyalists.
The announcement followed the publication of a letter from Santos to Trump in The South Shore Press, a local Long Island news outlet. In the letter, Santos appealed to the president’s “sense of justice and humanity,” writing, “You have always been a man of second chances, a leader who believes in redemption and renewal. I am asking you now, from the depths of my heart, to extend that same belief to me.”
This latest act of clemency is part of a broader trend since Trump’s second term, which has included a blanket pardon and widespread clemency for 1,500 individuals involved in the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, including those convicted of violent crimes. Other recipients of presidential clemency have included former GOP Rep. Michael Grimm, convicted of felony tax fraud; former Connecticut Gov. John Rowland, found guilty of political corruption; and reality TV stars Julie and Todd Chrisley, convicted of conspiracy to defraud banks of over $30 million. Trump also commuted the federal sentence of Larry Hoover, founder of the Gangster Disciples, who was serving a life sentence for murder and other federal charges (though Hoover remains subject to state sentencing).
Trump further justified his decision on social media, stating, “Santos had the Courage, Conviction, and Intelligence to ALWAYS VOTE REPUBLICAN! George has been in solitary confinement for long stretches of time and, by all accounts, has been horribly mistreated.” He concluded, “Therefore, I just signed a Commutation, releasing George Santos from prison, IMMEDIATELY. Good luck George, have a great life!”
Prosecutors alleged that Santos misused campaign donations during his 2022 run, spending funds on personal expenses including OnlyFans, Sephora, Hermès, spas, and Botox. They also accused him of identity theft, claiming he used donors’ credit cards without authorization.
Throughout his career, Santos was plagued by controversy surrounding dubious claims about his background, education, and personal life. He previously stated that his grandparents survived the Holocaust and that his mother survived the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, assertions contradicted by immigration records. A Navy veteran also accused Santos of failing to deliver funds raised through a GoFundMe campaign for his dying service dog.
