Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has asked the country’s parliament to approve the deployment of troops to Qatar to provide security during the 2022 World Cup in late November, the state-run Anadolu news agency reported.
This followed a request from Qatar for security support during the contest, Erdogan said in a letter on Saturday to the legislature, which is controlled by the ruling party and its nationalist allies.

Turkish military personnel will help secure the tournament, which is expected to attract more than a million visitors, against “terrorist” threats, among other things, Erdogan’s request letter said.

Turkey has “extraordinary cooperation” and “historical and cultural ties” – will help stability in the Gulf region as well, Erdogan added. Turkey already has a military base in Qatar.
According to a protocol signed between Turkey and Qatar and published in Turkey’s official gazette earlier this summer, Ankara will deploy riot police, bomb experts and police dogs ahead of the World Cup, which will be held from November 21 to December 18.

According to Turkey’s Interior Ministry, more than 3,000 Turkish police will be deployed to secure the event.
