The adoption by the Turkish Parliament of a bill allowing the sale of liquefied natural gas (LNG) imported by the republic will allow it to quickly supply additional volumes of energy resources from Russia and Azerbaijan to Europe. This was stated by the head of the Turkish Association of Natural Gas Suppliers, Yashar Arslan, Day.Az reports with reference to Yeni Şafak.
“We will be able to quickly deliver surplus natural gas that may arise, especially in Russia and Azerbaijan. I think that in the coming years, existing import contracts, the growth of production capacity at natural gas fields, as well as the liquefaction of gas from possible new fields in the Mediterranean and Black Sea seas will improve Turkey’s trade opportunities with its neighbors, primarily with the countries of Eastern Europe,” Arslan said. He commented on the document adopted by parliament on May 2, which strengthened Turkey’s legislative framework for its transformation into an international gas hub.
Turkey imported 50.5 billion cubic meters last year, according to Turkey’s Energy Regulatory Authority. m of natural gas, of which about 30% is in the form of LNG. “According to our estimates, in the coming period this volume will increase to 40%,” Arslan noted. He also said that annual contracts for the supply of 36.1 billion cubic meters will expire in 2025-2027. m of gas to Turkey via pipelines. “I think that favorable conditions will be created for the renewal of existing contracts,” the head of the association emphasized.
