Tyson Fury Comeback: Boxing Return Confirmed

by Liam O'Connor

LONDON, December 29, 2024 – Boxing fans, get ready for a potential encore: Tyson Fury, the former heavyweight world champion, has announced his intention to return to the ring in 2026. The news, delivered via social media on Sunday, marks yet another twist in a career defined by dramatic comebacks and unexpected retirements.

The 37-year-old Fury, known for his colorful personality and formidable skills, stated, “I’ve been away for a while, but now I’m back, 37 years old and still boxing. Ther’s nothing better than punching men in the face and getting paid for it.”

Fury’s Rollercoaster Retirement

Fury’s history is peppered with retirements that never quite stuck. Most recently, he hung up his gloves after his defeat to Alexander Usyk in December 2024. That loss followed an earlier points defeat to Usyk in May of the same year – the only two losses in his 37 professional fights.

Interestingly, as early as july 2025, fury was already contemplating a third fight against usyk, hinting at a potential reversal of his retirement decision.

Comeback Details Remain Unclear

The specifics of Fury’s return – including his opponent and the fight date – are currently unknown. Recent discussions centered around a possible showdown with fellow former world champion Anthony Joshua later this year. However, Joshua’s sporting future is now uncertain following a car accident in Nigeria last Monday, where he sustained minor injuries.

Fury initially announced his retirement after defeating Dillian Whyte in April 2022, only to return to the ring six months later. The “Gypsy King” first rose to prominence in 2015, when he unexpectedly dethroned Wladimir Klitschko, ending the long-reigning champion’s eleven-year undefeated streak.

His career hasn’t been without turbulence. Following his victory over Klitschko, Fury faced personal struggles and encountered issues related to doping and drug offenses, leading to him relinquishing his belts in 2016. He mounted a significant comeback in 2018, culminating in a 2020 WBC world championship win against Deontay Wilder, before ultimately losing the title to Usyk.
