‘Gageum Railroad Cultural Park’ with a total area of 2,903㎡ was created as a park green space in the city with historical and cultural value, including a cherry blossom trail, exercise facilities, rest facilities, and a memorial space.
The area of 15-28 Gajeong-dong, where the park was created, is in an important location connecting residential areas such as apartments and Jungnang Stream, so there was a lot of floating population passing from Uijeongbu-dong to Geumo-dong using the Gageum Railroad footbridge.
However, due to the steep slope of the abandoned railway site, it was exposed to the risk of safety accidents, and in particular, after the demolition of the US 39 supply line, it was left as bare land for a long time, impairing the urban landscape through illegal cultivation and garbage dumping.
Accordingly, the city has established a park creation project plan in active consultation with the Ministry of National Defense since 2019 to expand green and leisure spaces in underdeveloped cities and prevent urban disconnection due to the Ministry of National Defense’s plan to sell abandoned railway sites. After completing three years of land compensation from 2021 to last year, construction of the park began this year.
Mayor Kim Dong-geun said, “The disconnection of the city caused by the abandoned railway site was able to be improved through the creation of this cultural park. “We are happy to be able to return the green park space to the citizens who desperately wanted it to be turned into a park after being abandoned as an abandoned railroad for 20 years,” he said. “We hope that many citizens will be able to heal to their heart’s content in a beautiful and comfortable park.” .
Meanwhile, the U.S. 39 Supply Line is a transportation line established after the Korean War and used to supply supplies to U.S. military units. Around 2008, following the relocation of U.S. military units, it lost its purpose as a transportation line and was sequentially demolished by the Ministry of National Defense around 2011.

In addition, Uijeongbu City (Mayor Kim Dong-geun), the women-friendly city supporters ‘Yeouiju‘ (owner of the women-friendly city Uijeongbu, Chairman Yang Sook-kyung) held a ‘Work Day’ event at the Northern Gyeonggi Women’s Employment Fair on October 16th (Shinhan University Eunhye Hall Indoor Gymnasium). It was announced that a ‘gender equality promotion campaign’ had been carried out.
This campaign was designed to eliminate stereotypes about gender roles and spread the value of gender equality in order to prevent women from taking a break in their careers and promote social participation.
Following last month’s Gender Equality Week event, Yeouiju prepared for this campaign and produced promotional items (ribbon keychains, eco-friendly scrubbers) with talent donations from members.
We communicated with citizens who participated in the expo by conducting a survey on ‘sexual stereotypes given to men and women’ and ‘policy ideas for realizing gender equality’.
Mayor Kim Dong-geun said, “I hope this event will be an opportunity to understand and empathize with the value of gender equality,” and added, “We will continue to actively pursue projects to create a social atmosphere that practices gender equality in work and family.”
