Ukraine allowed a complete stop of gas transit to Hungary

Ukraine expects a significant reduction or complete cessation of the transit of Russian gas to Hungary through its territory, said the head of the “GTS Operator of Ukraine” Serhiy Makogon on his Facebook page.

“Despite the contract until 2024, we expect a significant further reduction or complete stop of transit to Hungary via Ukraine. Therefore, the technical completion of Nord Stream 2 creates critical risks of the existing transit through Ukraine and the extension of the contract after 2024, ”wrote Makogon.

He also commented on the agreement between Hungary and Gazprom: “a vivid example of the Kremlin’s policy towards Ukraine – as soon as it becomes technically possible to bypass Ukraine in the transit of gas, Gazprom launches gas through longer, but its own transit pipelines.”

Earlier, Gazprom and Hungary signed an agreement for the supply of gas until the end of 2036. The agreement will enter into force on October 1. The agreement provides for the possibility of changing the conditions after 10 years.

On August 30, Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Economic Relations Peter Siyjarto announced that the gas price would be “much more profitable” than the cost of fuel supplies under the previous contract signed in 1995. As part of the deal, Gazprom will supply Hungary 4, 5 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually along two routes: 3.5 billion cubic meters – through Serbia and 1 billion cubic meters – through Austria, the head of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry said earlier.
