Ahead of crucial midterm elections in the US, Ukraine’s president has hinted at the possibility of peace talks with Russia. Earlier he refused to hold talks with President Vladimir Putin, but now he has indicated that he is ready. In a message to the international community on Monday, Volodymyr Zelensky urged Russia to “compel genuine peace talks.” He also listed his usual conditions for negotiations. They include the return of all Ukraine’s occupied lands, compensation for war damage, and the resolution of war crimes.
Notably, Ukrainian President Zelensky, who signed a decree at the end of September declaring that “negotiations with Putin are impossible,” is now open to negotiations. It is no exaggeration to say that Western arms and other aid have been crucial to Ukraine in fighting Russian aggression. But Ukraine’s president has come ahead of the talks amid fears that the results of Tuesday’s US midterm elections could set Washington’s future political and financial support for Ukraine to change.

If Republicans win the congressional elections, it will not be easy for President Joe Biden’s administration to provide more military and other aid to Ukraine. Russia and Ukraine held several rounds of negotiations in Belarus and Turkey early in the war. The last meeting of the delegations in Istanbul in March stalled the talks after no agreement was reached.
Meanwhile, Russia’s deputy foreign minister, Andriy Rundenko, insisted on Tuesday that Moscow had not set any conditions for resuming talks with Ukraine.
