In a session of the Security Council, UN humanitarian agencies reported that the entire population of the Gaza Strip is hungry to varying degrees.

The deputy director general of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) pointed out that some 2.2 million people are in a situation of food crisis or worse (stage 3 or higher of the hunger classification), “the percentage “highest number of people suffering from this type of acute food insecurity” than that classification “has ever recorded.”

For his part, Maurizio Martina added that they estimate that around 50% of the population is in an emergency situation (phase 4) and, at least, one in four households is in catastrophic or famine-like conditions (phase 5). .

Martina noted that severe restrictions on fuel shipments are paralyzing the operation of water infrastructure and desalination plants, the production and delivery of basic food products, and the supply of electricity.

On average, about 98 aid trucks entered Gaza this month, the UN agency said in its latest situation report.

The United Nations (UN) special rapporteur on the right to food, Michael Fakhri, said that Israel has used disproportionate force against civilians in its attacks in Gaza since October 7, 2023, and has also committed genocide by use hunger as a weapon.

Noting that famine broke out in the region after Israel blocked food and water from entering Gaza, Fakhri noted that the latest UN data reveals that about a quarter of Gaza’s population is starving and the rest are malnourished
