The Ombudsman, Iris Marín Ortiz, had a meeting with the representative of UN Women in Colombia, Bibiana Aido Almagro, it was agreed to jointly implement routes of action to confront the human rights crisis that affects women in the country. In addition, actions were established to support the work of community rights defenders in the territories.
Likewise, there will be technical support from the same United Nations agency to work on the strategic planning of the Ombudsman’s Office and the updating of its gender policy. “Women’s rights, gender equality and the prevention of violence are a priority,” emphasized Defender Iris Marín.

The key purpose is to advance common lines of work between UN Women and the Ombudsman’s Office, said representative Bibiana Aido, “especially to surround the work of women’s human rights defenders in Colombia and continue advancing in the prevention of femicides.” .
The agreement also includes the creation of working groups between the parties, in order to promote the empowerment of women and gender equality throughout Colombian territory. Among the priority issues are economic strengthening, the eradication of violence against women, peace and security, as well as the promotion of leadership and political participation, to promote comprehensive progress in the country.
The most recent national bulletin of the Colombian Observatory of Femicides reports 417 femicides between January and June of this year. Every day 2 women are victims of feminicide in Colombia! Some days the victims are more than 2! With this figure, the first semester of 2024 is ranked as the semester with the highest rate of femicides, since records have been recorded in Colombia.
