A Briton, sentenced in June to more than two years in prison for having aborted several weeks beyond the legal deadline, will be released. Carla Foster, the woman in question, had obtained abortion pills during confinement in 2020, after lying about the duration of her pregnancy.

Then pregnant from 32 to 34 weeks, Carla Foster had tried to abort in May 2020 before the help was called, because the woman was actually giving birth. The born child was pronounced dead 45 minutes later by doctors. Carla Foster was sentenced to 28 months in prison in June.

“Free Carla Foster”

In England, Wales and Scotland, pregnant women have the right to have an abortion until the 24th week of pregnancy, compared to 16 weeks in France. The Court of Appeal commuted his sentence, reducing it by half and deciding for his release from prison. The judge in charge of the case spoke of a “very sad case (…) which calls for compassion, not a punishment”.

The case triggered a great mobilization in the United Kingdom. In particular, a demonstration took place in London in mid-June to demand an end to the criminalization of late abortions, with slogans such as “Free Carla Foster” or “Abortion is an act of health “.
