The Ministry of Cultures has launched its second annual Support Line for University Theaters, a public policy designed to recognize and bolster the vital role thes institutions play in the nation’s artistic landscape. Financed through the Performing Arts Fund, this year’s call for proposals offers an increased budget compared to the previous year, signaling a renewed commitment to higher education’s contribution to the arts.
Expanding Opportunities for Chilean Universities
The funding is specifically targeted towards private higher education institutions offering formal programs in theater, acting,or related fields – programs that must span at least eight semesters. Institutions must also demonstrate a commitment to active programming and possess the necessary infrastructure to stage and exhibit theatrical works.
According to a senior official, the resources will empower beneficiary institutions to “form casts to stage and circulate with unpublished theatrical productions, based on works from the universal and/or Chilean repertoire.” This emphasis on new works underscores the Ministry’s dedication to fostering creativity and innovation within the university system.
Reaching New Audiences Through Targeted Programming
A key development for the 2026 call is a focus on expanding access to the performing arts for younger audiences. A portion of the funded programming must be directed towards basic and secondary education students, with at least one performance specifically designated for municipal schools or those managed by Local Public Education Services (SLEP). this initiative aims to cultivate a new generation of theatergoers and broaden the cultural reach of university productions.
Fostering collaboration and Creative Development
Beyond production funding, the initiative prioritizes the formation of Creative Nuclei within each participating university. These teams will be responsible for the holistic development of the theatrical works, integrating professionals from the performing arts alongside faculty, students, and alumni.
Furthermore, each project is expected to incorporate complementary activities – such as workshops, talks, and meetings – designed to encourage active participation and dialog with diverse audiences. This holistic approach aims to create a vibrant and engaging cultural experience that extends beyond the stage.
Building on Past Success
Launched in 2025,the Support Line for University theaters acknowledges the meaningful contribution of university theaters to Chile’s cultural ecosystem. The program promotes sustained programming, the circulation of works, and the development of audiences within these spaces.
