As a result of the riots that occurred on the night of Wednesday to Thursday on the island of Martinique, 12 gendarmes were injured, one of whom received a gunshot wound.

As Day.Az reports with reference to AFP, numerous videos of the protests that have spread on social networks show burning barricades on the Fort-de-France ring road and shells that protesters throw at cars.

On Monday, clashes broke out between police and activists organizing a blockade in Le Lamentin. Local authorities say four gendarmes were slightly injured in Le Carbet during an operation to unblock a road. The municipal building used as an outpost of the newly created territorial brigade was also completely burned down.

Protests have been ongoing in Martinique since September. They are organized by the Movement for the Defense of Afro-Caribbean Peoples and Resources, which opposes the high cost of living. Protesters are demanding a reduction in food prices, which are 40% higher than in France.
