Researchers of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia-BarcelonaTechh (UPC) They work on the design and manufacture of artificial reefs with the objective of protect coastal environments from the effects of climate change and speed up the recovery of marine ecosystems.

Scientists are creating these reefs from waste from the steel and quarry industry. From the mixture of these materials, the researchers are working on a new printable material with technology 3D.

Louis Gilprincipal investigator of the project, explains that there is a big environmental problem with some materials of disposal relevant and who want to demonstrate that they can be used to restore the marine ecosystems.

Monitoring the performance of the submerged structure will be carried out with technologies that do not impact in ecosystems, such as video cameras and environmental sensors, by the SARTI OBSEA marine observatoryin Vilanova and Geltrú.

Joaquin del Riohead of the OBSEA, has stated that “it will be the first world observatory with systems and procedures specifically designed to monitor the impact and evolution of these artificial constructions”.

The use of this technology will position OBSEA as an international reference for other scientific groups that can benefit from its infrastructure to fight to preserve the marine ecosystem of their areas.
