The United Nations Security Council is scheduled to vote today on a resolution proposed by the United States calling for an “immediate and lasting ceasefire” in the Gaza Strip. With this initiative, Washington is trying to put pressure on Israel, amid ongoing negotiations with the terrorist group Hamas about the release of the hostages.

The US, a key Israeli ally, has already used its veto power three times to block ceasefire proposals in the region. However, now this proposal is again on the table and is being put to a vote by the Americans themselves. They consider a cessation of hostilities “essential” to protect civilians and provide humanitarian assistance to Palestinian Arabs.
US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield expressed confidence that the resolution will be adopted by all 15 members of the Council. Deputy Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the UN, Dmitry Polyansky, expressed doubts about the formulation of the project and the principle of its binding nature.
