A widespread outage impacting Verizon Wireless customers across the United States caused significant disruption on Wednesday, with over 168,000 reports of service failures flooding into Downdetector by 9:36 a.m. Pacific Time. The outage, affecting voice and data services, left many users unable to make calls or connect to the internet.
Nationwide Impact and Emergency Services Concerns
The scale of the disruption was substantial, extending from major metropolitan areas like New York and Philadelphia to states as far-reaching as North Carolina and Texas, according to reports shared on platforms like Reddit. The situation escalated to the point where Washington, D.C.’s emergency alerts account on X (formerly Twitter) issued a warning at 9:57 a.m. PT, noting that the nationwide Verizon Wireless outage could prevent some users from connecting with 911. The service advised those experiencing emergencies to utilize alternative devices, landlines, or physically visit emergency services locations.
Verizon’s Response and Ongoing Investigation
Verizon acknowledged the issue in a post to X at 10:07 a.m. PT, stating that its engineers were “engaged and are working to identify and solve the issue quickly.” A follow-up post at 11:14 a.m. PT reiterated the company’s commitment to resolving the problem, acknowledging the inconvenience to customers. As of 11:51 a.m. Pacific, outage reports on Downdetector had decreased to 63,542, suggesting a partial recovery, though many users continued to report issues, including phones stuck in SOS mode.
Impact on Other Carriers and City Services
While Verizon bore the brunt of the outage, other telecommunications companies also experienced a smaller number of reported issues. T-Mobile registered 1,856 reports by 10:20 a.m., while AT&T saw 1,746 reports by 10:05 a.m. However, T-Mobile clarified in a post to X at 11:28 a.m. Pacific that its network was operating normally, attributing the reports to customers attempting to reach Verizon subscribers. An AT&T spokesperson confirmed to CRN that the company’s network was also functioning as expected. New York City’s emergency management team indicated they were assessing the potential impact on city agencies and essential services, gathering updates from affected providers.
Recent Challenges for Verizon
This outage comes on the heels of a similar, albeit smaller, incident last summer, which Verizon attributed to a software issue, according to KRON4. Furthermore, the disruption occurs amidst a period of significant internal change for the company. Verizon recently announced plans to eliminate over 13,000 positions, with the majority of affected employees having already departed as of December. The company anticipates severance charges ranging from $1.6 billion to $1.8 billion in the fourth quarter of 2025 as a result of these layoffs. This nationwide outage represents an early challenge for Dan Schulman, who assumed the role of Verizon’s CEO in October, succeeding Hans Vestberg.
