In an exciting qualifying, the McLaren driver prevailed at the end and thus fought back against the world champion. Shortly before the end there is a violent crash.
Lando Norris secured pole position for the US Grand Prix in Austin. The McLaren driver drove the fastest lap in qualifying on Saturday afternoon local time and will therefore start from the front in the race on Sunday (from 9 p.m. in the live ticker on t-online). With his next pole, Norris also sent a signal to Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen, whom he narrowly relegated to second place. Just a few hours earlier, Verstappen had won the sprint race (read more about this here). It is already Norris’ fifth pole position of this season in the premier class.
The second row of the grid is shared by the Ferraris of Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc. Nico Hülkenberg in the Haas failed in Q2 and ended up in twelfth place.
Record world champion Lewis Hamilton, on the other hand, experienced a debacle in the completely renovated Mercedes. The British record winner from Austin made a serious mistake and was eliminated in Q1. Hamilton’s best lap, which would also not have been enough to advance, was subsequently deleted. He will start the main race from 18th and third-to-last place. Shortly before the end, Hamilton’s teammate George Russell crashed, and qualifying ended in the resulting yellow phase. Russell survived the violent impact uninjured.
Verstappen goes into the 19th Grand Prix of the year as the championship leader. By winning the sprint on Saturday, he extended his lead over Norris to 54 points.
