In a chaotic and exciting race until the end, Max Verstappen kept his nerve. He benefits from a penalty against his competitor.
max Verstappen secured victory in an eventful race in Qatar. The Dutchman, who had actually secured pole position on Saturday but was then given a starting position as a penalty, grabbed the lead from Mercedes driver George Russell right at the start. Lando Norris in the McLaren moved up from third to second place and pursued the world champion for almost the entire race distance.
The decision came with around ten laps to go when Norris received a stop-and-go penalty for failing to slow sufficiently during a yellow flag. He had to stay in his box for ten seconds and fell back to the back of the field. In the end he still reached tenth place. The punishment is also bitter for McLaren because it means they will lose ground on Ferrari in the constructors’ world championship. At the last race in Abu dhabi everything is still open.
Verstappen then confidently drove home the victory. Charles Leclerc in the Ferrari and Norris’ McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri completed the podium.
The race was also marked by a number of accidents and tire blowouts, which triggered a total of three safety car phases. Among others, the German Nico Hülkenberg retired early. But Verstappen didn’t let all of this bother him.
Even a week after the World Cup triumph, Verstappen was not lacking in motivation.Especially not after his pole position was taken away three hours after qualifying. The accusation: He was traveling too slowly at times. The worst sufferer in this specific incident was Russell, who moved to first place on the grid due to the grid penalty against Verstappen. Verstappen had to go to the dirty side of the track in second place.
Only behind came the McLarens, who had clinched victory in the sprint, when Norris let Piastri pass in the very last few meters as a thank you for his previous help. Norris finished third in qualifying and Piastri fourth. at least in front of the two Ferraris – Leclerc started from fifth position, Sainz from seventh. And the Scuderia’s mission was clear: together they were not allowed to score more then 15 points less than Norris and Piastri in order to maintain their chances of winning the team world championship.
Also meant: attack right at the start, in which Russell became the big loser. From first to third to the first corner. Verstappen passed and Norris too. The Brit also tried to beat his World Cup conqueror on the inside, but couldn’t get past Verstappen. Behind the top three: Leclerc, Piastri, Sainz.
Record world champion Lewis Hamilton didn’t just get off to a bad start when he fell from sixth to ninth. He also jerked off too early: “Sorry, boys,” he promptly radioed to the pits. As a punishment, he was also given a five-second penalty for the false start in the second Mercedes.
Verstappen, conversely, remained in the lead even after a safety car phase. After a starting accident in which Nico Hülkenberg in the Haas was also involved, the world champion once again gave Norris and the rest no chance at the restart.
Behind them,Piastri quickly grabbed Leclerc - the team title mission was in full swing. Initially, neither Norris Verstappen nor Piastri were able to overtake Russell on the track. In Russell’s case, this was caused by a stuck right rear wheel. Changing the tires took too long and the Las Vegas winner initially fell far behind.
What were the key factors that contributed to Max Verstappen’s victory in the Qatar Grand Prix?
