The Revierklub is still without a win after seven Bundesliga games. Now VfL is pulling the emergency brake. In addition to the coach, another leading figure has to go. The club’s explanation is clear.
VfL Bochum, which has slipped deep into a sporting crisis, has separated from coach Peter Zeidler. The Bundesliga soccer team announced this on Sunday evening. VfL most recently lost 3-1 at TSG Hoffenheim on Saturday and are bottom of the table with one point after seven Bundesliga games. This was now the 62-year-old Zeidler’s downfall. Sports director Marc Lettau also has to go with the coach.
“Despite many discussions and efforts in recent weeks, it has not been possible to achieve significant improvements in terms of sport or the table,” the club’s statement said. And further: “Taking these aspects into account, those responsible for the club, together with the sporting management and the team, carried out a thorough analysis. Result: There is a lack of conviction that VfL can achieve the goal of staying in the league with the current personnel constellation.”
Zeidler only took up the position at VfL on July 1st. However, his term in office was marked by bad luck from the start: Even before the start of the Bundesliga season, Bochum was eliminated in the first round of the DFB Cup due to a 0-1 defeat at second division team Jahn Regensburg, the club is in the top German league still winless, lost six of the first seven games.
It is not yet clear who will follow Zeidler and Lettau. “The club will inform you about the next steps as soon as possible,” the club concluded.
