“Please help me, as a 19-year-old, find my dreams again.”
Shaban al-Dalu, an ordinary student majoring in software engineering at Al-Hajjar University in the Gaza Strip, Palestine, entered a refugee camp set up in the parking lot of the ‘Al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Hospital in Deir al-Balah, central Gaza Strip, on the 14th (local time), a day before his 20th birthday. burned alive in This is because the Israeli military launched a large-scale airstrike on this place where many refugees were gathered.
After the war between Israel and Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip, broke out in October last year, Aldalu posted this on the online fundraising site ‘GoFundMe’, asking for help to help him and his family escape to Egypt. Although they raised more than $20,000 (approximately 27 million won), they were unable to escape and faced misfortune as Israel closed the Rafah checkpoint in the Gaza Strip leading to Egypt starting in May of this year.
The sight of the bombed Aldalu dying, engulfed in flames and helplessly waving his arms, was vividly recorded on video by a witness at the same refugee camp. As a result, global resentment against Israel, which does not care about killing civilians, is spreading.
According to the New York Times (NYT) on the 20th, Aldalu originally dreamed of becoming a doctor. Due to expensive tuition, I changed my career path to software engineering and desperately wanted to study abroad. Because of the war, all these dreams were in vain. He had to fear for his life every day and suffered from malnutrition due to lack of food.
Aldalu and his mother were killed in this airstrike. His father, Mr. Ahmed, cried out that during the air raid, Aldalu’s two younger brothers were saved, but his wife and son could not be saved. Mr. Ahmed confessed that he shouted, “I’m sorry, please forgive me,” to his son who was dying and burned.
Israel claims that an airstrike targeting the command center was inevitable because there were many Hamas members disguised as refugees in the Al-Aqsa Hospital area. However, many refugees, including the Aldalu family, were upset because they believed that Israel would uphold international law not to attack medical facilities. U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield criticized, “Even if Hamas conducts operations near the hospital, Israel has a responsibility to take all possible measures to avoid civilian casualties.”
