Yangon: The UN Security Council has expressed concern over the escalating violence against civilians following the military coup in Myanmar. The UN has called for an end to the violence and for the military to exercise restraint. All 15 members of the rescue committee agreed. The UN statement came amid reports of an increase in military presence in the western province of Chin. The army plans to launch a major offensive to oust the civilian forces formed after the February 1 military coup overthrew the democratic government. The United Nations has called on the Myanmar military government to end the violence immediately and ensure security.

Chin State is home to strong opposition to the military regime. It is reported that the number of people protesting against the military regime in the country is increasing day by day. The Security Council requested that in addition to the International Atomic Energy Agency’s ongoing inspections in Iran, that it monitor Iran’s compliance with “the steps required by the IAEA Board”. The UN has observed that the people of Myanmar need to be able to engage in dialogue in accordance with their wishes and interests, rather than through force, and to persuade them to abandon the path of violence.

Meanwhile, an American journalist was sentenced to 11 years in prison in Myanmar for spreading fake news and sharing provocative information. Danny Fenster, an American journalist, was convicted. Fenster’s lawyer said the court found him guilty of involvement with illegal organizations and violating visa rules. He had been charged with terrorism and treason the previous day.

Fenster is the managing editor of the online magazine Frontier Myanmar. Fenster was captured by Myanmar forces at Yangon International Airport last May.
