PORTRAIT – The Dutch photographer spent her childhood in Kenya, before becoming a model. She combines all her memories to create a superb, sensual work, close to painting and surrealism. The MEP offers him his first French retrospective in Paris.

Viviane Sassen was almost unrecognizable on November 29, when Queen Maxima of the Netherlands visited his exhibition at the European House of Photography (MEP), at the gates of the Marais. Black suit, bun, neutral makeup, she suddenly seemed an incongruous and very classic version of herself, next to the queen, in a beige trench dress and matching high pumps. In the official photos, it is Queen Maxima who looks like a cover girl, and the artist looks like a wise lady.

And yet, born in 1972 in Amsterdam, Viviane Sassen, who grew up in Kenya, approached the world of photography first as a model. Before reversing the camera and capturing the beauty and strangeness of the world in his own powerful and sensitive way, through images constructed like paintings or surrealist collages. Using fashion as a screen, she has created her own visual language, where the body is sculpture, where the skin is silk, where color bursts, in the image…
