Verizon Wireless Outage Disrupts Service for Hundreds of Thousands
Verizon customers are experiencing widespread disruptions to wireless voice and data services across the United States, with reports of outages peaking at over 181,000 as of Thursday afternoon. The issues, first noted around 12PM ET, have left many users unable to make calls or access the internet, with some seeing an “SOS” message displayed on their smartphones instead of traditional network bars.
Outage Impacts and Customer Reports
The problems appear to be concentrated in major metropolitan areas, particularly along the East Coast. According to reports, text messaging remains functional for some users, offering a limited means of communication. However, for many, the inability to connect for calls and data is significantly impacting daily life.
“We are aware of an issue impacting wireless voice and data services for some customers,” Verizon stated in a post on X. “Our engineers are engaged and are working to identify and solve the issue quickly. We understand how important reliable connectivity is and apologize for the inconvenience.”
DownDetector Data Reveals Scale of Disruption
Data from DownDetector illustrates the severity of the outage. The platform registered a peak of 181,769 reports for Verizon, dwarfing the outage reports for competing carriers AT&T (1,769 reports) and T-Mobile. The significant disparity suggests that many AT&T and T-Mobile reports may stem from individuals attempting to reach Verizon customers and mistakenly attributing the issue to their own network.

Geographic Concentration of Issues
The majority of reported issues are originating from major cities including Boston, New York, and Washington D.C., though hotspots have also been identified in Chicago, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. This geographic concentration could indicate a localized infrastructure problem affecting key network hubs.
Ongoing Response and Previous Outages
As of 2:14PM ET, Verizon confirmed that its engineering teams “remain fully deployed” to resolve the outage. The company has not yet provided an estimated time for resolution or the total number of customers affected. This incident follows a similar network issue in September 2024, which also impacted users’ ability to make calls and lasted for several hours.
This is a developing story, and time.news will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
