The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) extended the yellow meteorological warnings regarding maritime unrest along the entire coast of the Portuguese mainland until 24:00 on Thursday, it was announced today.
As had already been announced, the yellow warnings (the least serious level on a scale of three) come into force at different times on Thursday: from 09:00 in the districts of Viana do Castelo, Braga and Porto, from 12 :00 in Aveiro, Coimbra and Leiria, from 15:00 in Lisbon and Setúbal, and from 18:00 in Beja and Faro.
Initially, IPMA predicted the end of warnings at 6:00 pm on the same day in all these districts.
Other yellow warnings remain in place for Thursday, relating to rain and wind, almost all until 6pm. In the case of Faro, the windy period (starting at 15:00) was also extended until 24:00.
In total, due to forecasts of rain, wind and/or sea disturbances, there are 15 districts under the yellow level that day, at different periods, and the information can be consulted on the IPMA website.
The institute warned on Monday of a change in the weather on the continent from Thursday, setting warnings for 13 districts, to which Faro and Beja were added today. The northern districts will be the first to be affected. Without any warning are Santarém, Portalegre and Évora.
In Monday’s statement, IPMA explained that, after the influence of an anticyclone that brought stable weather and above-average temperatures to the continent (with a heat wave in the North and Center), the rain will return because this anticyclone should weaken, allowing precipitation to approach (Atlantic depressions and associated frontal surfaces).
Today and Wednesday the change in weather will be noticeable, with some rain in the North and Center. On Thursday, rain, sometimes heavy, is expected first in Minho and Douro Litoral.
The intensity of the wind will also increase, with gusts that can reach 90 kilometers per hour on the north and central coast and up to 110 kilometers in the highlands, and there will be a decrease in temperature.
On Friday the situation should be identical, and there may also be thunderstorms and snowfall in Serra da Estrela.
