Wasserman Agency Faces Exodus as Epstein-Maxwell Links Spark Artist Revolt
A growing number of artists are seeking to sever ties with the Wasserman Agency following revelations about founder-CEO Casey Wasserman’s past connections to Ghislaine Maxwell, a close associate of the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The crisis, which erupted last week after the release of new documents, has prompted an ultimatum for Wasserman to step down, and threatens to destabilize one of the music industry’s largest agencies.
The situation has escalated rapidly, with multiple artists publicly expressing their discontent and initiating the process of leaving the agency. According to sources, Wasserman is currently facing pressure to sell or divest the company, an option he has so far resisted. He is scheduled to meet with top executives this week to determine a path forward, even as his position as chairman of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics organizing committee comes under scrutiny.
“It’s a house on fire,” one source familiar with the internal turmoil stated.
The artist departures began with Best Coast’s Bethany Cosentino, and have since included Chappell Roan, Wednesday, Water From Your Eyes, and Beach Bunny, all of whom have voiced their concerns on social media. Cosentino articulated a sentiment shared by many, stating, “As an artist represented by Wasserman, I did not consent to having my name or my career tied to someone with this kind of association to exploitation. Staying quiet isn’t something I can do in good conscience.”
The Wasserman Agency boasts a prominent roster of talent, including Ed Sheeran, Coldplay, Childish Gambino, Kendrick Lamar, Lorde, Phish, Raye, SZA, Joni Mitchell, Janelle Monae, Tyler, the Creator, and hundreds more. In a move seemingly prompted by the artist exodus, the agency’s client roster was removed from its website in recent days.
However, the agency’s structure presents a unique challenge. While artists are generally not bound by long-term contracts, agents typically are, with agreements spanning three to five years. Furthermore, artists often demonstrate greater loyalty to their individual agents than to the agency itself, frequently following agents as they move between companies – a pattern that can span decades.
The crisis reached a “fever pitch” over the weekend and continues to accelerate, sources say. Veteran agents, including Marty Diamond and Duffy McSwiggin, are reportedly uniting to preserve the company in some form. Multiple offers for the agency have reportedly been made, along with discussions about a potential buyout by the executive team, though the viability of these proposals remains unclear.
News of the impending ultimatum was initially reported by The Wrap on Sunday, following the release of the latest Epstein-related documents. Representatives for Wasserman and the affected artists largely declined to comment on the unfolding situation.
In a social media post on Monday, the band Wednesday acknowledged the agency’s staff while condemning Wasserman’s connections. “Last week we were among the hundreds of artists who were aghast to find out about Casey Wasserman’s communications with Ghislaine Maxwell,” the band wrote. “It’s also important that we acknowledge the team of people we work with at the Wasserman agency as decent and trustworthy people with whom we’ve worked several years dating back to a time prior to their connection with Wasserman.”
The Wasserman Agency was established in 2021 through a merger between Wasserman’s existing sports division and agents and artists who had departed from Paradigm. Notably, the sports division is not currently experiencing a similar level of crisis.
While Wasserman has not been implicated in any of Epstein’s crimes, documentation reveals he traveled on Epstein’s private jet in 2002 as part of a Clinton Foundation delegation on a humanitarian trip, and exchanged emails described as “raunchy” with Maxwell while married. He has publicly apologized for these associations, stating he was “terribly sorry for having any association with either of them.” He also maintains leadership roles in several charitable organizations.
This controversy marks the second public scandal for Wasserman in 18 months. In July 2024, during the Paris Olympics, a report surfaced alleging “serial” affairs with junior employees over several years. Wasserman did not comment on these allegations, which initially generated attention but subsequently faded. Billie Eilish’s departure from the agency was speculated to be linked to this report, though sources indicate she was already planning to leave.
The timing of these allegations, coming in close succession, is proving particularly damaging. As one source noted, “Optics – particularly for a company named after its founder – can matter more than facts.”

As the situation continues to develop, the future of the Wasserman Agency remains uncertain, and time.news will continue to provide updates as they become available.
