Mayor Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Tapas has claimed that the waste management program of Dhaka South City Corporation (DADSIC) has been brought in order.

He claimed this during an exchange with the media persons after the inauguration of waste transfer center number 69 of the city on Wednesday (March 27).

The mayor said, ‘I saw after taking charge that there were frequent accidents and some people lost their lives. We didn’t have a regular driver. The vehicles were almost all old and battered. As a result, procurement and supply systems were in a very fragile state. Garbage was lying in the open on the streets. But, we have come a long way from there. We have purchased 25 dump trucks with our own financing. I have appointed about 100 new regular heavy vehicle drivers. Earlier cars were driven by everyone. It is no longer there. We have revamped the entire waste management program. Waste is no longer seen lying openly on the streets. This is how we are modernizing the entire waste management process, bringing it into order.’

Step by step improvements are being made in the waste management process, he said, adding that the cleaner a city is, the more the city’s aesthetics and beauty will increase. Earlier in the city of Dhaka, waste was lying everywhere, including drains and walkways. To overcome that situation we have decided to build one waste transfer center in each ward. These works are being done with complete self financing. However, the biggest obstacle in this case is the lack of space. We have been able to construct waste transfer centers in 64 wards so far. After I took charge, the 40th Waste Transfer Center was inaugurated with it. Earlier we had only 24 waste transfer stations. We have brought about a radical change in this program by constructing 40 waste transfer centers within a short span of time. And if only 11 waste transfer centers are constructed, the entire Dhaka city will come under our program. Earlier we used to see that 100% of the waste was overflowing on the road. People could not go to the mosque by stepping on dirt. From that situation we are improving step by step. At present we can collect about 80 percent of the waste. Inshallah, in a short time we will be able to finish the remaining 20 percent and free the people of Dhaka from the garbage of overflowing waste.’

At that time, in response to a question regarding the outbreak of Aedes mosquitoes, the mayor said, ‘Last time, we conducted a combing operation in the areas where more than ten patients were found. We have jointly conducted campaigns to raise awareness. As awareness has increased through this, so has public involvement. If the people become responsible and do not allow water to accumulate anywhere, keep the yard of the house clean, then only we will be able to give relief to the people of Dhaka from the outbreak of Aedes mosquitoes. We can be 100% successful.

Later, the Mayor inspected the waste removal program from Konapara to the canal adjacent to Galakata bridge. At that time, the chief executive officer of Dhaka South City Corporation. Mizanur Rahman, Chief Waste Management Officer Mohammad Nashim Ahmed, Regional Executive Officer of Region-8 MJ Arif Beg, Executive Engineer of Waste Management Department Dr. Safiullah Siddique Bhuiyan, Salahuddin Ahmed of ward number 69 among the councilors, Md. of ward number 64. Masudar Rahman Molla, Abdul Matin Saud of Ward No. 66 and Mahfuza Akhter Himel of reserved seat and others were present.
