Last week, the Chief Justice of the Chennai High Court had directed the Chief Secretary to the Government of Tamil Nadu to file a report on the steps taken to prevent water logging in Tamil Nadu. The statement said, “Increase water resources to meet drinking water shortages and meet water needs for domestic, agricultural and industrial use; Serious action is being taken on behalf of the Government of Tamil Nadu to protect the water bodies. ”

He further said that the Supreme Court and High Court orders regarding the protection of water bodies have been complied with and a report has been filed in this regard by 2020. Other details he mentioned in the statement were: “As per the recommendations of the Central Government, the guideline rating on government outlying lands has been changed to zero. The IG has taken steps to ensure that water levels are not recorded. In addition, various measures have been taken to ensure that no provision is made for watershed constructions and that the Rural Development Department does not grant planning permission for buildings.

In addition, a separate department has been set up for water resources development. This led to a policy decision to create non-occupied water bodies, and last July all district governors were ordered to take action to eliminate water occupations. Consultations have been held with all departmental officials in this regard. It has ordered the simultaneous removal of occupations across the state. We are reclaiming the small ponds and ponds that have been invaded with the help of local farmer youth.

Following the order of the Chennai High Court, a consultative meeting was held with all the departmental secretaries and important decisions were taken. In particular, the District Collectors have been directed to work with all departmental authorities to collect statistics relating to water occupation and send it to the Revenue Secretary.
