VfL Wolfsburg won the top game in the women’s Bundesliga. It was the first defeat for the Munich team in over two years.
The VfL Wolfsburg footballers have ended FC Bayern’s impressive winning streak in the Bundesliga. The runner-up and cup winner won 2-0 (1-0) against the champions from Munich, who had previously been unbeaten in 44 league games. Vivien Endemann (5th minute) and former Bayern player Lineth Beerensteyn (67th) scored in front of 17,152 spectators in the Volkswagen Arena. Wolfsburg is now only two points behind league leaders FC Bayern.
For the guests, who had previously won all eight competitive games this season, the duel against their long-term rivals got off to a very bad start. Striker Jovana Damnjanovic made a catastrophic bad pass into the feet of Endemann, who gratefully accepted the gift and shot it into the top right corner from 15 meters.
Damnjanovic was not granted the chance to make amends for her mishap. The top game ended prematurely and painfully for the 29-year-old offensive player in the 20th minute when, after a header duel with Wolfsburg’s defense chief Marina Hegering, she collided heavily on her back and had to be substituted straight away.
For long stretches, Munich could hardly find any means against the hosts, who were extremely disciplined defensively. Wolfsburg, on the other hand, remained aggressive and benefited from another Munich misfire. Because national striker Lea Schüller failed in an attempt to clear the ball, Beerensteyn, who came on after the break, scored from a few meters to make it 2-0.
The soon to be ex-national players Alexandra Popp and Hegering even missed the 3-0 with their heads. On the other side, Wolfsburg’s goalkeeper Merle Frohms directed an attempt from Pernille Harder onto the crossbar in the final phase. FC Bayern suffered its last Bundesliga defeat to date on October 23, 2022, also in Wolfsburg (1:2).

Conclusion: The game is over. The Bayern women can still lose in the league and in the end they deserve to admit defeat. Lea Schüller and Co.’s offensive was far too harmless for that today. Wolfsburg gained a lot of self-confidence with the win.
