by time news

Genoa – From noon, a yellow hydrological weather alert will be issued for thunderstorms and widespread rain throughout Liguria, with the exception of the west. It will last until 11.59pm although it is not out of the question to extend the opening hours since the weather is expected to deteriorate significantly on Tuesday 8 October.

For today, as stated on the Arpal website, “rain, including downpours or strong thunderstorms, is expected to intensify on Tuesday and become widespread with possible persistent phenomena. A partial improvement is likely on Wednesday as you await a new turbulent transit on Thursday”.

The weather alert in Liguria, the areas and times

The yellow alert is scheduled for Monday 7 October from 12pm to 11.59pm. It applies to small and medium-sized basins throughout Liguria except those in the far western area.

The Regional Operations Room will remain open for the duration of the alert. In the event of a severe event, a site monitor will be posted during the alert .

On the site omirl.regione.liguria.it or on the meteo3r app it is possible to follow the evolution of the weather through radar images and other tools made available to everyone.

The weather situation in Liguria

“Precipitation, including thunderstorms, is expected from Monday, with a convergence between warm and moist winds from the south-east and cooler and drier winds from the north, a convergence which begins to organize itself from the central part of tomorrow and which will last more than twelve hours – we read in a note from Arpal – The cumulative expectations are already more than significant on Monday evening. From the evening onwards the convergence will be stronger, a precursor to strong, organized and continuous thunderstorms during the night between Monday morning and Tuesday. Cumulative expectations will be high, with moderate to strong southerly winds on Monday, strong on Tuesday”.

The provisions in Genoa

The Genoa COC (Municipal Operations Center) met this morning and, on the basis of the yellow alert announcement issued by the Liguria Region, implemented the actions proposed by the Municipal Civil Protection Plan for the management of hydrological risk .

During the alert period, citizens are required to adopt self-protective behaviors throughout the city.

In particular, when the alert state is issued:

  • protect the rooms located at street level with bulbs or sandbags and close the doors of cellars, garages and basements;
  • moving cars and/or motorcycles to high ground that is not flooded;
  • keep first aid kit, battery powered radio, electric torch at home;

When the alert comes into effect:

  • keep up to date with the evolution of the situation and pay attention to the indications provided by the authorities, radio, television and all other official sources of information;
  • stay in a safe place, avoiding the areas of the city that are most subject to flooding, such as underpasses, roads near the banks of streams, bridges, footpaths, and generally the lowest areas of the city;
  • do not enter or remain in cellars, garages, basement rooms or at street level until the end of the event and go up to the upper floors, ALWAYS avoiding the use of the lift;

During the entire duration of the yellow alert, civil defense volunteers and the local police monitor the main waterways in the municipal area.

The weather situation in Italy

More bad weather is expected in the coming days with three disturbances. According to the forecasts of Antonio Sanò, the founder of the site www.iLMeteo.it, the disturbances will come as a result of a post-hurricane that is reaching Great Britain and the unstable and turbulent spirals will reach the Mediterranean basin, including Italy. . All the disturbed fronts will be fed by cooler air at height and pressure instead by southerly winds (Sirocco) which will raise temperatures especially in the Mid-South. The first disturbances in these hours are affecting the North with the first rains in the western sectors. But Tuesday is the 8th day when the turbulent front will intensify. On this day heavy or very heavy rain will hit Liguria, it will quickly pass over Piedmont and then it will hit Lombardia, Veneto, Trentino Alto Adige (especially Trentino) and Friuli Venezia Giulia. Bad weather will also hit Tuscany, Lazio (Rome at risk of flooding) and western Umbria hard and Emilia Romagna less hard. After this turbulent passage on Wednesday 9th there will be a temporary sunnier break, with Libeccio winds, awaiting the second disturbance. On Thursday 10th another unstable front will reach the North, still driven by strong Sirocco winds. The bad weather will mainly affect the Alpine and pre-Alpine sectors and the middle/high northern plains, locally in Tuscany. It will also be sunnier and warmer in the rest of Italy (peaks of 34°C are expected in Sicily). From Friday the subtropical high pressure could return, ushering in a period of more stable weather with more sunshine and even warmer temperatures. In detail – Monday 7. Dark skies in the North and rain becoming more widespread in the North West. Center: Lots of clouds, no rain. Good weather in the South. – Tuesday 8. Widespread bad weather in the North. In the Center it worsens with heavy rain in Tuscany, Umbria and Lazio. In the South it gets worse in Campania in the evening. – Wednesday 9. Irregular clouds in the North, rain in eastern Liguria and the western Alps. In the Center between sun and scattered clouds. Cloudy skies in the South. Trend: new disturbances on Thursday, then gradually more stable weather. (HANDS). DCL
