Wales Launches Gaming Academy to Fuel Next Generation of Game Developers

A new initiative aims to provide comprehensive business support to Welsh game companies, bolstering a sector poised for important growth. The Gaming Academy Program will offer intensive mentorship and resources to 12 games companies over eight months, building on existing investment from Creative Wales.
The programme is designed for recipients of the latest round of Creative Wales’ development Funding, who have already secured between £25,000 and £50,000 to advance their game concepts. Organizers emphasize the programme’s goal is to maximize the impact of this initial funding by providing crucial industry expertise and guidance.
Bridging the Gap for Welsh Game Studios
Wales boasts a burgeoning game development scene, but a key challenge has been providing founders with the commercial and investor support needed to scale their businesses globally. according to a representative from Tramshed Tech, a co-working space supporting startups, “Wales has incredible creative talent in games, but too often founders don’t get the commercial and investor support needed to scale globally.” The Gaming academy is positioned as a direct response to this need,aiming to equip studios with the tools to become enduring and attract investment.
The programme’s structure is divided into two phases. The initial two-month phase is an intensive accelerator, focusing on business idea validation through workshops, mentoring, and a final showcase. This will be followed by up to six months of ongoing support, including personalized mentoring, networking opportunities, and readiness for major international events like the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco and Gamescom.
Comprehensive Support for Business Acumen
Participants will receive targeted assistance in critical areas such as business modelling, user research, market sizing, revenue planning, and pitch refinement. All sessions will be led by experienced founders and domain experts, ensuring practical and relevant guidance.
The timing of this initiative is notably significant given the global gaming market’s substantial value. Reports indicate the UK gaming market was worth approximately £7.82 billion in 2023, while the global market is estimated at a staggering £352 billion.Creative Wales has already demonstrated its commitment to the digital sector,having directly supported 77 companies – including game,animation,and immersive tech studios.
Government and industry Collaboration
The programme represents a collaborative effort between Creative Wales and partners like Tramshed Tech, which Wired magazine has recognized as a UK Top Ten co-working space. A senior official stated, “This programme is about giving games developers in Wales the complete package they need to succeed. It’s not just funding – it’s expert mentoring, practical business skills, and the connections needed to achieve commercial success.”
The initiative’s impact is already being felt by participating studios. Henry Jones, Founder of Hypertonic Games Limited, highlighted the importance of the support for his company’s virtual reality project, honey & Hives, stating, “Access to funding and wider support is vital for emerging Welsh studios like mine, helping us navigate both technical and commercial challenges.” Similarly,Alex Lightman,Head of Development at Good Gate Media,emphasized the value of the “wraparound support and funding” in enabling their company to scale and maximize its commercial potential.
