Burning fireworks in CDMX can be quite expensive
Due to the above, the Government of Mexico City (GOBCDMX) and the Ministry of the Environment (THE REASON), through the General Directorate of Air Quality (DGCA), call on the inhabitants of the Metropolitan Zone of the Valley of Mexico (ZMVM) to avoid the use of fireworks during Christmas Eve, Christmas and New Year celebrations.
The above in order to:
- Reduce the negative impact on air quality.
- It takes care of people’s health, mainly the most vulnerable sectors such as children, older adults, pregnant women and people with respiratory or cardiovascular diseases.
- Take care of the well-being of pets.
Well, they highlighted that the concentrations of pollutants reach their peaks between 1:00 and 5:00 in the morning, which is why SEDEMA, through the DGCA, invites citizens to put the following actions into practice:
- Avoid lighting fireplaces, as well as burning firecrackers and fireworks.
- Do not light bonfires, especially in areas where there is a risk of forest fires.
- Reduce the use of charcoal or firewood as much as possible, whether indoors or outdoors.
- Avoid burning tires, garbage or any other waste.
- Participate in cleaning streets and sidewalks, moistening the ground a little before sweeping to avoid raising dust.
- Keep vehicles in optimal condition and adhere to the Mandatory Vehicle Verification Program to prevent automotive units from generating polluting emissions that affect air quality.
- If fires are detected, notify the corresponding authorities so that they can be controlled appropriately.
Fine for burning fireworks in CDMX in 2024
And although fireworks can look very beautiful in the sky, due to the colors they emanate, it is worth mentioning that these are prohibited in CDMX and the State of Mexico and the authorities have implemented sanctions to discourage this practice.
While people who are caught thundering fireworks will be sanctioned, the fine will be:
Article 28, section VII, of the Civic Culture Law of Mexico City, considers the use of artificial games as an infraction against citizen safety.
“Detonate or ignite rockets, fireworks, bonfires or raise aerostats without permission from the competent authorities.”

In case of violating this law, people could pay a fine of 21 to 30 Measurement and Update Units (UMA), which is currently equivalent to two thousand 280 pesos and up to three thousand 260 pesos.
In case of not being able to pay the fine, the offender will undergo arrest for 25 to 36 hours or community service for 12 to 18 hours, all in accordance with article 31 of said legislation.
