Doctors may prescribe puberty blockers and hormones if children are uncomfortable with their biological sex. When does it make sense and how safe is it?

If a child feels very uncomfortable with their birth gender and wants to change this, this is called gender dysphoria. There is currently no consensus among medical professionals on how best to help children. Some advocate a transaffirmative approach.

This means encouraging the child’s desire to adopt the opposite gender. For example, they are addressed by their desired name, shown at school under the new gender, drug treatment is started and gender reassignment surgery is later carried out. The assumption behind this is that the desire for gender reassignment persists.
