A bitter comedy that alternates tears and laughter

Fourth film directed by screenwriter Francesco Bruni – the television “dad” of Inspector Montalbano e author of many Virzì films –, What will be it certainly is the most successful and moving film by the Roman director. Bruni indeed takes inspiration from an autobiographical story: the illness which had struck him a few years earlier and which, fortunately, is managed to defeat.

Transferring onto the his cinematic alter ego Kim Rossi Stuart not only the central theme of health, but also a series of personal reflections on the world of cinema, Bruni succeeds in the difficult task of prevent autobiographical elements from suffocating the story. Choosing the tones of bitter comedy where, inevitably, they emerge purely dramatic moments but also other more light-hearted ones.

Very well written, and it couldn’t be otherwise, What will be and also a film featuring great actors, primarily Kim Rossi Stuart (also co-screenwriter) who puts himself on the line as only great performers can do. But the surrounding cast is certainly no exceptionfrom the awkward stepsister played by Barbara Ronchi to very good Fotinì Pelusoin the role of the protagonist’s daughter, who gives a sunny and sensitive performance.

His father Bruno, on the other hand, lives in the clouds, he’s a big boy. She is his shoulder, even too much; she is only twenty years old, with some fragilities that no one cares about.
